Concerning Descriptions and Conditions
At Master Clock Repair we value our reputation highly and make every effort to interact with our customers with integrity. We try very hard to describe our clocks as accurately as possible. However, it is very difficult to call out every nick and scratch that may be present. Antique clock cases, by definition, are almost never perfect. When we use the description “very good” regarding a clock case we do not mean that it is perfect. We would designate these as in “excellent” condition. The description, “very good” would mean that the clock presents itself very well when displayed on a wall or mantle with no glaringly obvious defects that would detract from its appearance when seen from a typical viewing distance of four or five feet. If a clock is listed as being in “good condition” we will normally state where and what the major defects are in the description. We will also often use a photo to show these defects. Because we try to only sell clocks that we ourselves would be proud of, you will almost never see a clock listed as being in “poor” condition.

Antique Dr. Pepper “Phos-Ferrates” Advertising Railroad Regulator
with Calendar
$1495
Advertisements have often been placed on clocks. One of the most prolific clocks used for advertising was a clock style called a Railroad Regulator. On this clock style the advertisement was placed on the lower door glass. The “Phos-Ferrates” logo design was Dr. Pepper’s first advertising design and slogan. Although reproduction items are readily available, I have searched for quite some time attempting to find any original antique items with this logo on it and have come up empty.
“Phos-Ferrates” meant that Dr. Pepper contained phosphorous and iron. Early advertisements for Dr. Pepper’s Phos-Ferrates, as it was then called, stressed that it contained no caffeine or cocaine. One ad bragged, “Dr. Pepper stands alone on the bridge defending your children against an army of caffeine-doped beverages, as the Great Horatius defended rome.” Another defended Dr. Pepper as the “finest tonic beverage…a brain food and exhilarant. Consumers were advised to drink it whenever they needed a cool head or had important business to transact.”
Another early advertisement stated, “Brush the cobwebs out of your brains! And regulate your digestion by drinking Dr. Pepper’s Phos-Ferrates! Equal to the finest champagne. Nothing so palatable and Refreshing ever before offered to the American People.” The (above) 1890 advertisement called Dr. Pepper’s Phos-Ferrates “the best tonic, besides a most refreshing drink”, and (to repeat) essentially promises stimulant-like wakefulness and “regulate your digestion”.
